MARSHFIELD WRAP-UP NOTES

By: Kevin Ramsell
BURLINGTON, WI (Wednesday, September 10, 2008) – Tim Schendel is coming off an impressive performance at Marshfield Super Speedway by winning the Kim Parsons Memorial 100 this past Sunday. The win allowed Schendel to join Dan Fredrickson and Donny Reuvers as the only three drivers mathematically eligible to win the 2008 American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment.

SCHENDEL HONORED BY SPEED 51

Schendel’s win was recognized by speed51.com as they named him the Quarter Master Clutch Performer of the Week.

Speed51 stated that not only did Schendel have to fend off the best in the ASAMT for the win, but also several other choices to be named, “There were several strong choices for the Quarter Master Performance of the Week that our panel suggested and voted for, including the track crew at Thompson International Speedway (who cleaned up nearly five inches of rainfall from Tropical Storm Hanna to hold 400+ green flags of racing on Sunday), first-time PASS South winner Jay Fogelman, Carquest Tour winner Wayne Smith and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victor Todd Szegedy,” the website stated.

FREDRICKSON, REUVERS, OR SCHENDEL

As noted earlier, only three drivers are eligible to win the ASAMT Championship on Oktober 5th at Oktoberfest Race Weekend at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

After Marshfield, Fredrickson has a 56-point lead over Reuvers and a 135-point lead over Schendel going into FEST.

Chris Wimmer is fourth, 174 points back and is mathimatically out of the running being that the most points handed out at an ASAMT event is 160 points. 20 points for appearing at the event, 20 points for fast time, 20 points for winning a qualifying/qualifier race and 100 points for winning the feature event.

In the event, that after qualifying and the qualifier races that Fredrickson still had a 56-point lead over Reuvers going into the feature event, if Reuvers was to win the race, he would need Fredrickson to finish 20th or worse for Reuvers to take the championship.

“DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH”

In a recent conversation with famous ARTGO promoter John McKarns, he shared some memories of Marshfield Super Speedway. The track was opened in 1977 as a dirt track and was changed over to an asphalt track in the Fall of 1995.

The ARTGO Challenge Series had one event at Marshfield and that was on June 23, 1996 that was won by Joe Shear. McKarns pulled up the race story from his archives and stated that Shear was spun out by Jim Weber on lap 42 and came through the field to win the race.

McKarns was also quoted in that article calling Marshfield a “diamond in the rough.”

One other note from that event, Rich Snyder who operates the Racefreak souvenir trailer at all ASAMT events, was eighth in that race.

SOMETHING SIMILAR?

Another thing McKarns noted in a conversation that he had with Dean LaPointe was the similiarty of Marshfield to La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Both have semi-banked wide turns that provide great side-by-side racing which the ASAMT competitors displayed on Sunday.

From the great side-by-side battle that Andew Morrissey and Nathan Haseleu displayed while battling for the lead in the early going to Tim Schendel coming from his 13th starting spot to win to Steve Holzhausen coming from ninth to a third place finish to his surprise. One has to wonder what the competition and the racing will be like on Championship Weekend at Oktoberfest.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

The ASAMT would like to thank all of the teams, officials, and fans for their participation during our four events in four weeks stretch that ended this past Sunday at Marshfield.

Those four events (Shakopee, Milwaukee, Norway, and Marshfield) had an average field of 33.75 cars, with four different winners.

It also saw the point standings swing like the stock market with Reuvers getting within five points of Fredrickson halfway through the four race stretch.

Most of all, the four races had incredible fan attendance capping off with over 18,000 fans at The Milwaukee Mile.

After this four week stretch, the ASAMT teams and officials will enjoy a nice break until the Championship Weekend at Oktoberfest on Oktober 4-5. The ASAMT will be running the last two days of the four-day race weekend. But do expect many ASAMT competitors to compete in Friday’s Dick Trickle “99” and some of the new stars competing in the Futures race on Thursday night.
